Professor Charles Schewe’s course, Tools for Professional Success, gives students the opportunity to explore real business challenges for different clients and propose solutions during a final presentation. Peter Warren '17, Liz Imbrogna '17 and Rachel Kirshtein '17 were assigned to Peter Pan Bus Lines. Their research targeted the Northeast's college student population along with opportunities for Peter Pan's charter services and general ridership.

It’s a Cinderella story in the making. In their first immersion in a major collegiate sales competition, four Isenberg undergrads representing the school’s recently launched Sales Club were third runners-up at the venerable Northeast Intercollegiate Sales Competition (NISC) in November. The Isenberg students excelled in a field of 19 colleges and universities and 120 students. In the contest, at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island, students (four and five per institution) role-played 10-minute videotaped sales calls with private industry “partners” serving as fictional sales...It’s a Cinderella story in the making. The pursuit of business and social goals in “hybrid” social enterprises was a key theme in the second annual Social Entrepreneurship Day, on December 6th in the Student Union’s Cape Cod Lounge. Coordinated by the Isenberg-based Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, the day-long event featured a keynote presentation by Cornell University/ILR School professor Marya Besharov and separate practitioner and academic panels.

In the interview—the magazine’s current cover feature—he outlined the strategic and tactical elements that we will continue to deploy in growing Isenberg’s reputational capital. He also underscored the importance of measurable execution in that pursuit.
The Berthiaume Center was proud to host the kickoff event for this year’s Innovation Challenge, where students from Geography, Chemistry, Management, and Mechanical Engineering took home prizes. This Minute Pitch Competition boasted a greater variety of disciplines represented, an increase in number of graduate student participants, and greater quality of ideas than we have seen in the past. Over 60 teams from across campus submitted applications to compete in the event and 31 were selected to present their ideas to an audience of approximately 150 and a panel of 5 judges.
“What are the true opportunities for cross-pollination in a world sports community? What skills and network will you need?” asked sports agent/marketing innovator J.B. Bernstein ’91 in Professor Todd Crosset’s graduate course, Social Historical Foundations of Sport. The UMass grad is best known for creating The Million Dollar Arm contest in India, which generated the first two athletes from India to sign professional sports contracts in North America.

Isenberg students gained valuable insights and sharpened their analytical and presentation skills on September 30th at the school’s first Annual Isenberg Ethics Competition. The five-hour event featured an inspiring keynote speaker, workshops that explored ethical issues and case competition skills, and the competition itself. In the latter, five teams—each with two Isenberg students—squared off to dissect ethical decision points at a banking company.

O'Leary MBA Leadership Orientation, which immerses students in workshops and team exercises devoted to professional development skills.

On September 16, Isenberg alumni, students, faculty, and staff celebrated ground breaking for the school’s $62 million Business Innovation Hub. When the Business Innovation Hub does open in January of 2019, the futuristic building complex will add 70,000 square-feet of classrooms, labs, and student-focused spaces.
Ten Isenberg students joined forces with 18 UMass engineering students and faculty from the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship to make their mark in the U.S. Department of Energy’s annual Collegiate Wind Competition.

“No matter where we go, no matter what we do, we carry the Isenberg brand with us,” Senior Class Speaker Stephanie Berenson ’16 told an audience of over 4000—graduating seniors, their families, and Isenberg faculty and staff—at Isenberg’s Senior Celebration at the Mullins Center on May 7. “We are part of each other. We are each other’s network, and one day, as graduates, we will be a resource for Isenberg students just as alumni have been for us,” emphasized the dual marketing/journalism major.
A team of five Isenberg undergraduates scored two first-place and one second-place finish in the International Business Ethics Case Competition, on April 20-22 in Cambridge. The team explored First Amendment and other issues involving free-speech versus abusive messaging on a social networking site.

Automated Controversy Detection, a startup business founded by UMass Amherst computer science 4th-year Ph.D. candidate Shiri Dori-Hacohen earned top honors of $35,000 in seed money on April 7th at the campus’s 2016 Innovation Challenge business plan competition. Coordinated by the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, an Isenberg-based initiative that promotes entrepreneurship across the UMass Amherst campus, the multi-stage Challenge, in its culminating event of the year, featured six student teams that vied for $65,000 in awards.
