“There is renewed energy in Isenberg’s PhD program,” exults its director, George Milne. In 2017, the program, he notes, generated 18 graduates, the highest number in its history. (Milne cites records dating from 1984.) “The students,” he continues, “are engaging in research earlier in their careers and continue to refine their teaching skills both in live and online classes. That reflects our commitment to continuously improve teaching and research.”

"Business leadership is critical. As a management major at Isenberg I learned about balancing economic growth with social responsibility,” emphasized Earl Stafford ’76 at Isenberg’s Business Leadership Awards (IBLA) dinner on June 15. Stafford was Principal Honoree at the annual event, which attracted 340 Isenberg stalwarts to Boston’s Colonnade Hotel. “Isenberg taught me business practices and techniques. Professors like Tony Butterfield and Art Elkins taught me the importance of value-based decisions—decisions that also promote the common good,” he told the gathering.
Isenberg economist and Professor of Operations and Information Management Robert Nakosteen discussed the implications of Britain’s Brexit vote on a morning-after interview with WBUR in Boston. Professor Nakosteen addressed the Brexit’s likely impact on financial markets, including pension funds. He also reflected on its influence on Massachusetts’ trade relations with Europe and the costs and benefits of a stronger dollar.
On May 25, three UMass Amherst-based startups—all recipients of advice and technical assistance from Isenberg School of Management MBA Fellows working through the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship—were among 12 monetary award recipients/graduates of the Valley Venture Mentors (VVM) Accelerator program in Springfield.
